About Visiting Spirit Horse Retreat, Pennant Valley

Location

The Spirit Horse Retreat is set within extensive mountainous woodland and waterfalls at the head of the secluded Pennant valley, about halfway between Newtown to the East, and Machynlleth to the West. It takes about five hours to drive there from London, three hours from Bristol and two and a half hours from Birmingham or Manchester.

If you are coming by train, the closest stations are either Caersws, or Machynlleth.  We can arrange a pickup at around 4pm (£20 to the driver for the 2 hour round trip please) otherwise please share a taxi.

Arrival and Parking

There is a mountain top carpark with amazing views over the valley. When you arrive you will be met at a previously agreed time by the site crew ‘sherpa’s in four wheel drive who will bring you and your gear down to the camp, or you may prefer to walk down the track, especially if it is a lovely sunny day. Full directions will be provided on booking.

Accomodation

Shared accommodation is provided in comfortable round houses and cabins, with wood stoves and foam mattresses.  Or you are welcome to bring your own tent and camp out near the river on the camping meadow. It can get cold at night, so please bring ample bedding to ensure your comfort. We supply firewood for the woodstoves and outdoor fires.

Meals and catering

Three wholesome, mostly vegetarian, meals a day will be provided, and shared in the large light and airy camp kitchen. Specific dietary requirements can be catered for as long as this is made clear when booking.

Other facilities

There are natural waterfalls and fairytale bathing pools, which more than compensate for the lack of hot showers! There is also a cosy wood fire sauna beside a small waterfall and rock pool. Beautiful fresh spring drinking water is available throughout the site. There are compost toilets that are private and secluded.  The phone network and signal is good in several locations in the camp.

Useful things to bring with you

Please bring ample warm and water proof clothing, footwear and warm socks, hats and gloves for your comfort. There is limited electricity in the camping area, and no electricity in the tents, although camping lanterns are provided. It will be helpful to bring a torch, and an alarm clock so you can minimise your use of mobile phones whilst you are here.

If you would like any more information before booking please email Helen at Helen@beyondthegarden.uk, who will be happy to answer any questions. Once you have booked we will be in touch to confirm details regarding accommodation, dietary requirements and travel directions.
